The city of Fayetteville is mourning the loss of Nick Williams, a talented and beloved senior athlete at E.E. Smith High School, who was among the three students killed in a devastating car crash Wednesday evening on Rosehill Road.
According to the Fayetteville Police Department, the crash occurred around 7:22 p.m. when the vehicle carrying four students veered off the road, struck a telephone pole, and rolled down an embankment before stopping against a tree. Three teens were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill in critical condition.
Police identified the victims as #4 Nick Williams, #11 Trevor Merritt, and #21 Jaihyon Elliot — all standout student-athletes and teammates on the E.E. Smith High School football team.
Nick Williams, 17, was a senior from the Class of 2026, remembered by friends and coaches as a dedicated athlete with a bright future ahead. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds, Nick was known for his strength, determination, and unwavering love for sports.
He played football, baseball, and basketball for E.E. Smith High School — proudly wearing #4 in football, #2 in baseball, and #24 in basketball. His versatility and leadership made him a vital part of every team he joined.
Coaches described Nick as “a natural athlete with a big heart,” and teammates said he was someone who “always showed up for others,” both on and off the field.

The deaths of Nick, Trevor, and Jaihyon have left the E.E. Smith High School community heartbroken. The school has postponed its upcoming football game against South View High School out of respect and mourning.
