The Fayetteville community is reeling after a tragic car crash claimed the lives of three E.E. Smith High School students on Wednesday evening, including senior football player Jaihyon Elliot, who lived in Fort Bragg and was originally from Charlotte NC.
According to Fayetteville Police, the crash occurred around 7:22 p.m. in the 2700 block of Rosehill Road. Authorities say the vehicle carrying four students veered off the roadway, struck a telephone pole, and rolled down an embankment before stopping against a tree.
When first responders arrived, three teens were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill in critical condition.
Among those who lost their lives were #21 Jaihyon Elliot, #11 Trevor Merritt, and #4 Nick Williams — all talented athletes and students at E.E. Smith High School.
Jaihyon “Jai” Elliot, a senior student from the Class of 2026, was known for his dedication on and off the field. Wearing #21 for the E.E. Smith Varsity Football Team, Jaihyon was a respected teammate, a passionate player, and a beloved friend to many.
Coaches described Jaihyon as “a leader with heart,” someone who played not just to win but to lift the spirit of his team. His determination and positive energy made him a standout both in games and in the classroom.
Teammates shared emotional tributes on social media, remembering his contagious smile and his unwavering love for football. One friend wrote,
“#21 forever. Jai had the biggest heart. It doesn’t feel real — you’ll always be part of this team.”
The entire E.E. Smith High School community has been shaken by the loss. Principal and coaching staff have postponed the Friday night football game against South View High School, allowing time for students, staff, and families to mourn and honor their classmates.
Grief counselors have been made available on campus to support those affected by this devastating tragedy.
Images of the three boys — Jaihyon, Trevor, and Nick — have been shared across social media, showing them smiling proudly in their team uniforms. The photo now stands as a painful reminder of three promising lives cut short.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash. The Fayetteville Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate the incident.
